the loosening

When they turned on us and shouted as if their body parts were signs of offering

We clenched our hands into fists,

and let our mother tongues flow like water on bruised cheeks

loosening our gripped jaws,

we let our lungs run, round and round on route to exhaustion,

as the darkness envelops our bodies, drawing us into its embraces

heating our blood

————

When they grouped together like a pack of wolves on their nightly hunt

the light dawned in their glazed eyes,

yes

the recognition must have hit like a bullet

you must have felt my anger and disappointment at your throat,

daring you to open your bat cave and let the darted poisons fly,

to fly into my clenched fists,

yes the recognition must have hit

because you bowed before your queen ashamed

as the stars clapped and nodded with approval

as your friends kissed my clenched fists,

yes it must have hit
